Thermal protection
Monitoring of the ambient temperature does not guarantee that the junction temperature (TJ) is within
the specified temperature limits.
The junction temperature of the device is dependent on the ambient temperature (TA), the power
dissipation of the device (PD), and the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of the package (θJA). An
estimation of the junction temperature (TJ) can be calculated using the formula
TJ = TA + (PD × θJA)
Where:
TJ = junction temperature
TA = ambient temperature of the package (°C)
PD = power dissipation of the package (W)
θJA = junction to ambient thermal resistance (°C / W) = 72°C/W
The value of θJA can vary, depending on PCB material, the layout, and the environmental conditions.
The specified value of θJA (72°C/W) is based on a 4-layer, 101.5 mm x 114.5 mm circuit board as
specified in the JEDEC standard JESD51-9.
